Description:
Event DetailsJoin Lewisham Heritage for a Tea Time Talk with Jack Fortescue of Acme, taking us on a quick journey through the history of Deptford's Acme Propeller Factory at 165 Childers Street.
After the short talk, attendees are welcome to share their memories of the building and companies who have occupied 165 Childers Street.
165 Childers Street formed part of J Stone and Co.'s large engineering works when it was built in the early 20th Century.
The company relocated in 1959 and it was bought by Donovan Bros for use as a paper bag factory. Over 150 people worked in the factory, most of whom were local women.
Since 1990, Acme has been converting the building into artist studios. It is now home to 180 artists and is the largest affordable artist studio building in the UK.
Throughout its history the building has provided workspace for creation and manufacturing.
Refreshments will be provided.
Jack Fortescue works for Acme, a charity formed in 1972 which provides affordable studios, work/live space and a programme of residencies and awards for artists at 15 sites across London.
