Description:
Event DetailsJoin Lewisham Heritage and local author and photographer Amelia B. Kyazze to talk about the research for her most recent book, "The Cafe on Manor Lane".
"The Cafe on Manor Lane" is Amelia's latest novel, set in Lewisham. The book is about a French refugee who falls in love with a Nigerian doctor in London in the 1950s. Through the decades that follow, London can be a harsh but beautiful place. It is through the eccentric community around them, and the kindness of strangers, that pulls them through.
Amelia is a local photographer and creative writing facilitator, drawing upon different techniques to create a compelling story. The book touches on important historical events such as the days of the great smog of 1952, race riots in the 1960s, the Battle of Lewisham in 1977, and the riots in 2011.
Amelia is also the author of two other books, Into the Mouth of the Lion and Ahead of the Shadows. These books are set in Central and West Africa in the early 2000s, where she once worked with Oxfam and other humanitarian organisations.
This is a free and open discussion/Q & A with the author to talk about techniques, approaches and materials when writing fiction set in distinctive historical moments.
