Terms and Conditions
Eligibility to join
• Anyone who lives, works or studies in the UK, with a permanent UK address, can become a member of Lewisham Libraries. If you do not currently have a fixed address or proof of address, we may still be able to help, so please ask for assistance.
• Although not mandatory, providing an email address or phone number allows us to contact you regarding reservations, item due dates and other necessary Lewisham Libraries information.
• If you are under 14 years old we ask that a parent or legal guardian act as a guarantor.
When you become a library member
• You are entitled to borrow from all Lewisham libraries plus The Libraries Consortium (TLC) collections.
• You are responsible for everything taken on your card; you should not lend it to anyone, including members of your own family. If you lose your card, please tell us immediately. We may make a small charge to replace a lost card.
• You are entitled to free use of the computers in all TLC libraries and access to the library reference resources online at https://libraries.lewisham.gov.uk/digital-content/elibrary.
• You may borrow free of charge:
- Up to 20 books, 18 eBooks/eAudio, 6 music CDs, for 3 weeks
- Up to 3 DVDs for 1 week (subject to BBFC age ratings)
- eNewspapers, eMagazines and eComics on your personal devices
• Most of our lending library stock is free to borrow, is easily renewed online, over the phone or in person, and may be returned to any TLC library. Items are due back by the date printed on the receipt at the self-checkout terminals or viewable online; charges may be made for late return.
• You will receive automated notifications by email regarding items that are due or overdue and reserved items ready for collection. Changing details and card expiry
• Please inform us as soon as possible if your address or contact details change.
• If your account is inactive for a continuous period of 3 years with no outstanding charges, TLC’s library management system will automatically delete your details to comply with data protection regulations. If you wish to use the library but your account has expired due to inactivity, you will be asked to re-register and provide proof of name and current address.
Use of IT services within the library
• When using library technologies (e.g. public WiFi on your own device, Lewisham Libraries computers, printers or other hardware) you are bound by the terms of the Computer Misuse Act 1990, the UK GDPR, the Digital Economy Act 2010 and Lewisham’s own terms of use. • Individual library service providers in Lewisham and TLC may have additional terms of use that will apply when their using IT facilities. These will be made clear upon accessing the facilities.
Data protection and privacy policy
• Lewisham Libraries comply with the United Kingdom General Data Protection Regulation and Data Protection Act 2018.
• Your personal data is securely stored at all times and can only be accessed by those persons who are authorised to provide library services within TLC. There may be occasions when your data will be shared within the Council when required by law, or with contracted organisations to deliver specific services.
